Spring 2017 Celebrate Learning, Januray 10-11, 2017 (NEW)

Spring 2017 Celebrate Learning has been scheduled for the morning of January 10 and the afternoon of January 11. Our guest speaker for the opening keynote is nationally known Linda Suskie. Please see the attached Celebrate Learning schedule for her bio and all session information. This event is designed for all faculty (both part-time and full-time), however, staff are always welcomed to participate with prior approval from their supervisor.

Tutoring Center Christmas Break Info

The Burns Hall Tutoring Center will be closed beginning Saturday, December 17 and will reopen when classes resume on January 17. This also includes the WCC tutoring services as well. New Composition II Class-Professional Writing for Food Studies Students

Students who want to practice writing for the needs of the real world will benefit from this class. Open to all who are interested, and this course transfers as a Composition II course. NWACC Chamber Orchestra

NWACC Chamber Orchestra has openings for all string players, including violin, viola, ‘cello, and string bass. Non-students of all ages within the community are welcome, but we have a limited number of scholarships available for both music majors, as well as non-music majors. Orchestra meets every Wednesday 6:00-8:30 PM beginning spring semester 2017.

Spring 2017 Home For Dinner Scholarship Application Now Available! 

The Spring 2017 Home For Dinner Scholarship application is now available for Arkansas or Missouri residents with a 2.0 GPA who are a veteran of the U.S. Military, currently on active duty, or a member of the National Guard. For a copy of the application, click HERE!

2017-2018 Scholarship Application NOW AVAILABLE! 

The Scholarship Application for the 2017-2018 academic school year is now available thru March 1st, 2017. You will only have to fill out one application online. Our software will determine which of the 130+ scholarships available that you qualify for based on how you answer the questions on the application. Improve Your Communication 

NWACC’s Communication Department will offer COMM 2323 Interpersonal Communication this coming spring semester 2017. This course is nontraditional (no tests, no textbook) with the focus of hands on learning. Students will also conduct a Human Library Project as the primary courses assignment. Participants will also receive Service Learning Credit. The course will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-4:15pm in Burns Hall. Please see attached flyer.

Supply Drive/Fundraiser for the Cherokee Immersion School 

Students of the Native American Project (a service-learning project) are yet again doing a supply drive/fundraiser for the Cherokee Immersion School. If you would like to donate colored pencils/markers, colored paper, composition books, or any other school supplies for this unique Cherokee-language elementary school, please contact Chris Huggard, chuggard@nwacc.edu or 479-619-4270, for more information or to make a donation. Thanks to everyone who has already donated and for advancing the preservation of a dying language that is many thousands of years old but in peril.

Become a Master Naturalist in the Natural State

Applications are being accepted for the NWA chapter of Arkansas Master Naturalists. Annual training starts 1/21/17 for residents of Benton and Washington counties; 1/28/17 for residents of Washington and Madison counties. Classes will meet on alternating Saturdays. Cost is $135 for the training and materials, plus $30 annual dues. Limited scholarships are being offered.

2017 President’s Circle Art Exhibition

Two25 Art Gallery & Wine Bar, Bentonville The President’s Circle will host an art exhibition in partnership with Two25 Art Gallery & Wine Bar featuring artworks by NWACC alumni and current students April 1 – 30, 2017. A portion of purchase proceeds will benefit the student artist and the NWACC Foundation. This event is open to the public. To submit your work, click here!

Food Pantry Seeks Protein Items

A few weeks back we sent out a request for breakfast items for the NWACC Food Pantry. As expected, you all were great and response was outstanding. We now have a pretty good supply of breakfast items but are now in need of protein type items. These include peanut butter, dry beans, canned chicken, canned meat, nuts, ravioli, beef -a- roni, etc. Because of generous donations from NWACC employees and students, the NWACC Food Pantry has served over 300 NWACC students and employees this year. The pantry has operated solely on donations and hopes to continue to do so. For more information or to donate contact Becky Hudson at rhudson1@nwacc.edu

2016-2017 NWACC Scholarships 

All of the 2016-2017 NWACC scholarships have been awarded at this time. We had a record number of qualified applicants, which made awarding this year difficult. Please continue to check the daily announcements and the NWACC Scholarship Resources Facebook page for scholarships available outside the regular award period. The application for the 2017-2018 academic year will be open from December 1st, 2016 through March 1st, 2017.

NWACC Announces Food Pantry Distribution Dates

NWACC’s Food Pantry provides help to NWACC students, faculty and staff throughout the year. Food will be distributed on select Wednesdays and Thursdays, beginning August 30, 2016. The Pantry distribution times will be by appointment. A three-day supply of food is given. Applications for assistance can be picked up at the Student Information Center in the Becky Paneitz Student Center or at the Office of Student Life in room 225 H in the Becky Paneitz Student Center. All persons requesting assistance must have an initial application on file. They will then be required to complete a distribution request form each time they request assistance. Distribution Request forms must be turned in at the Office of Student Life no later than 3:30 pm on the Monday before distribution. Please see the attachment for distribution dates and guidelines. First Time Application and Distribution Request Forms are also attached. In emergency cases, food may be distributed outside of normal distribution times. Inter-Club Council (ICC) 

The Inter-Club Council, (ICC), is a group established by the Student Government Association that includes representatives from every campus club. Please join them once a month to hear what other campus clubs are doing and to learn about opportunities, such as funding, available to organizations. Any club member or adviser is welcome and encouraged to attend these meetings. Student Government Association Public Forum

The Student Government Association would like to invite the student body to attend SGA’s public forums where students can express their opinions and learn about happenings on campus. Free Counseling for Students

NWACC offers professional and private counseling to students through a partnership with area agencies. Jack Shewmaker Lecture Series (NEW)

Stu Todd will be the next speaker in the Jack Shewmaker Lecture Series.  He will be speaking on “Self-Leadership and Entrepreneurial Success.”  This event will be held Tuesday, Nov. 1, in Peterson Auditorium.  A reception will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the SCGBD Lobby with the program at 7:00 p.m.  This event is free to students, faculty, staff, and the public.

Discussion of the Book:  Dark Money (NEW)

Dark Money, the Hidden History of the Billionaires Behind the Rise of the Radical Right, is a 2016 book by award-winning author Jane Mayer. Guest presenter Marvin Hilton will summarize the book in an illustrated slide show and with brief video clips before leading a discussion with the audience (sponsored by the NWACC Service Learning Program and OMNI Center for Peace, Justice and Ecology). All students, staff, and the general public are welcome free of charge to the noon, Thursday November 3, event in the Becky Paneitz Student Center, Room 108A&B. The discussion will address the impact and ethics of the Citizens United decision of the US Supreme Court and the financing of political campaigns. Interpreters Needed (NEW)

Rogers Public School District is in need of six to eight Spanish and Marshallese interpreters/translators for their upcoming K-12 Parent/Teacher Conferences on November 1 and 2 from 3 pm – 6:30 pm. They prefer students who have completed and/or are in Advanced Spanish and/or Marshallese; more Spanish translators are needed than Marshallese. Students can choose to volunteer or to apply for paid positions that starts at $10/hour and it is usually 3+ hours per night. Open House at CHP

The Health Professions will be holding an open house on November 2 from 2:00 – 4:00 PM in recognition of COPD Awareness Month. Each of our programs will have displays to demonstrate how we all work with patients. S’mores and Hot Chocolate will be served and door prizes are available.

Workforce Wednesday

Serco will be on campus to recruit on November 2nd and December 7th from 11 am – 1:30 pm in the Student Center lobby. On November 9th they will be Burns Halls behind the elevator from 11 am to 1:30 pm. Then on November 16th in the Shewmaker Center for Global Business Development lobby from 11 am – 1:30 pm. Please bring your resumes and dress to impress. Students will be able to apply using the computers by Advising and interviews will be held in the Student Center Room #221. Eagle Games

The Student Ambassador team will host the Eagle Games on November 10th from 2:00 to 4:00 pm in the Game Room of Becky Paneitz Student Center. Coat Drive 

NWACC Human Resources will once again be partnering with the Benton County Sharing the Warmth Coat Drive this year.  On November 7, as the drive kicks off, we will be putting drop boxes in many buildings across campus to collect your donations of new and gently used coats and jackets.   The weather is starting to get chilly, and as you go through your closets and find coats that don’t fit or that you don’t want anymore, or if you’re out shopping and find a great sale, please consider giving the gift of warmth to Benton county residents in need.

Representatives from area colleges and universities frequently visit NWACC to speak with transfer students about their future academic goals. While the vast majority of visitors come to the Transfer Information Desk on the 2nd floor in the Student Center, locations may vary. FALL FESTIVAL

The Student Ambassador Team is hosting the Fall Festival event on October 28, from 6 pm to 8 pm, at Bogle Plaza and the Becky Paneitz Student Center, Bentonville main campus. The festival will have a Halloween theme and will include a Box maze, spook house, pumpkin carving contest, and best costume contest. Come and join us. The event will be free, and open to public.

Track III Nursing Application

Just as a reminder, the application period for the Track III nursing program sequence opened on October 1 and ends November 1. All who apply will receive a registration form for the HESI A2 entrance exam in their NWACC email after the application period closes on November 1. Silent Witness Project 

Join NWACC, the Northwest Arkansas Women’s Shelter, the Rogers and Bentonville Police Departments, the Prosecutor’s Office and supporters to honor those who have lost their lives to domestic violence, to celebrate survivors, and to recognize the impact of domestic violence in our community. Opening Ceremonies will be on October 7 in Downtown Bentonville with Closing Ceremonies October 27th at 12 p.m. . See flyer attached for details.

JB Hunt Transport, Inc. Logistics Scholarship is now available for the 2016-2017 academic school year for the students who meet the following requirements: must be pursuing a degree or certificate in Transportation and Logistics or Supply Chain, have a 3.0 GPA or above, must be a non-caucasian minority, must be an AR resident, and must have a willingness to participate in mentoring opportunities with J.B. Pick Me Up Catering will be parking a food truck on the east end of the newly paved parking lot by SCWT facing the street. They’ll be serving Greek and Italian food and will be there on Tuesdays from 11:00 to 1:30.

Donations and Volunteers Needed for NWACC Student Holiday Meal!

NWACC will be hosting the Student Holiday Meal for the 3rd year on December 8. Last year we fed just under 250 students and this year we are hoping to serve 300! We are in need of the following donations: Napkins, Assorted utensils, Large plates, Bowls, Small dessert plates, Wal-Mart gift cards, Desserts. Please note that if you would like to donate a dessert please specify the type and amount of people it will serve. Desserts will need to be dropped off on the morning of December 8. There will also be volunteers needed from 11am-12pm and 12pm-1pm on December 8 as well as volunteers to help clean up from 1pm-2pm. If you would like to donate any of the above or are interested in volunteering please contact Danielle Schader at dschader@nwacc.edu

Faculty Sabbatical Applications Invited 

Colleagues, the Sabbatical/Emeritus Committee has been notified that NWACC will grant one sabbatical leave for the 2017-18 college year. Full-time faculty who have at least seven consecutive years of full-time service in teaching at NWACC are eligible to apply, and applications are invited from any qualified candidate from any division of the college. The deadline for applications is November 15, and information on application procedures can be found on the FACULTY SENATE page under FACULTY LEAVES: http://www.nwacc.edu/web/facultysenate/facultyleaves

At that site you will also find the application form and links to successful applications from past grantees. Congratulations! to the Veterans Project Members

Students of the Veterans Project, a service-learning project dedicated to veterans issues and fundraising for the Josh McCandless Veterans Scholarship awarded each semester to vets who attend NWACC, successfully raised $561.75 on October 11 from the cookout that many of you purchased food from. Congratulations to Basheer Dalati, Austin Dill, Laura Franco, Leah Hunter, Holly Ketcher, Dylan Melvin, Nicole Plummer, Gabriel Ruiz, and Ashton Shelley, student members of the project, for hosting the cookout and raising the funds. Representatives from area colleges and universities frequently visit NWACC to speak with transfer students about their future academic goals. While the vast majority of visitors come to the Transfer Information Desk on the 2nd floor in the Student Center, locations may vary. Guests Pianists at NWACC!

Daryl Rojas and Uriel Pascucci, pianists from the studio of Jura Margulis, will perform in recital as guest artists on Tuesday, 25 October, 7:00pm, in the Shewmaker Center’s WalMart Auditorium. They’ll be playing the music of Beethoven, Prokofiev, Scriabin, and Ravel. Admission is free, and the public is invited.

FALL FESTIVAL

The Student Ambassador Team is hosting the Fall Festival event on October 28, from 6 pm to 8 pm, at Bogle Plaza and the Becky Paneitz Student Center, Bentonville main campus. The festival will have a Halloween theme and will include a Box maze, spook house, pumpkin carving contest, and best costume contest. Come and join us. The event will be free, and open to public.

Study Abroad – Summer 2017

Track III Nursing Application

Just as a reminder, the application period for the Track III nursing program sequence opened on October 1 and ends November 1. All who apply will receive a registration form for the HESI A2 entrance exam in their NWACC email after the application period closes on November 1. Silent Witness Project 

Join NWACC, the Northwest Arkansas Women’s Shelter, the Rogers and Bentonville Police Departments, the Prosecutor’s Office and supporters to honor those who have lost their lives to domestic violence, to celebrate survivors, and to recognize the impact of domestic violence in our community. Opening Ceremonies will be on October 7 in Downtown Bentonville with Closing Ceremonies October 27th at 12 p.m. . See flyer attached for details.

JB Hunt Transport, Inc. Logistics Scholarship is now avaliable for the 2016-2017 academic school year for the students who meet the following requirements: must be pursuing a degree or certificate in Transportation and Logistics or Supply Chain, have a 3.0 GPA or above, must be a non-caucasian minority, must be an AR resident, and must have a willingness to participate in mentoring opportunities with J.B. 2017 President’s Circle Art Exhibition

Two25 Art Gallery & Wine Bar, Bentonville The President’s Circle will host an art exhibition in partnership with Two25 Art Gallery & Wine Bar featuring artworks by NWACC alumni and current students April 1 – 30, 2017. Food Truck on Campus

Pick Me Up Catering will be parking a food truck on the east end of the newly paved parking lot by SCWT facing the street. They’ll be serving Greek and Italian food and will be there on Tuesdays from 11:00 to 1:30.

Food Pantry Seeks Protein Items

A few weeks back we sent out a request for breakfast items for the NWACC Food Pantry. As expected, you all were great and response was outstanding. We now have a pretty good supply of breakfast items but are now in need of protein type items. These include peanut butter, dry beans, canned chicken, canned meat, nuts, ravioli, beef -a- roni, etc. Because of generous donations from NWACC employees and students, the NWACC Food Pantry has served over 300 NWACC students and employees this year. Donations and Volunteers Needed for NWACC Student Holiday Meal!

NWACC will be hosting the Student Holiday Meal for the 3rd year on December 8. Last year we fed just under 250 students and this year we are hoping to serve 300! We are in need of the following donations: Napkins, Assorted utensils, Large plates, Bowls, Small dessert plates, Wal-Mart gift cards, Desserts. Please note that if you would like to donate a dessert please specify the type and amount of people it will serve. Desserts will need to be dropped off on the morning of December 8. There will also be volunteers needed from 11am-12pm and 12pm-1pm on December 8 as well as volunteers to help clean up from 1pm-2pm. Capture the Flag Hacking Contest!

Come and join computer security professionals, hackers, INFOSEC enthusiasts, and other technologists in NWA for a local Capture the Flag event. Whether you’re a curious student just starting out, or an established professional looking for some hands-on experience, come spend time with your peers in an informal setting to build culture and community across the IT Security spectrum. The event will be Saturday, October 22, 2016 in the  NWACC Shewmaker Global Business Development Center.

Faculty Sabbatical Applications Invited 

Colleagues, the Sabbatical/Emeritus Committee has been notified that NWACC will grant one sabbatical leave for the 2017-18 college year. Full-time faculty who have at least seven consecutive years of full-time service in teaching at NWACC are eligible to apply, and applications are invited from any qualified candidate from any division of the college. All of the 2016-2017 NWACC scholarships have been awarded at this time. We had a record number of qualified applicants, which made awarding this year difficult. The application for the 2017-2018 academic year will be open from December 1st, 2016 through March 1st, 2017.

Fashion 4 A Cause (F4AC) Volunteers Needed

Would you like to see what happens behind the scenes of a fashion show? Are you good at planning events? We are looking for members of the NWACC family to participate as members of the F4AC Event Steering Committee, which will include planning, fundraising, and working the F4AC event on November 3rd. J.B. Hunt Transport, Inc Logistics Scholarship

The J.B. Hunt Transport, Inc. Logistics Scholarship is designed to provide financial assistance to non-Caucasian minority NWACC students who are seeking degrees in Transportation and Logistics or Supply Chain, and who excel academically. NWACC Announces Food Pantry Distribution Dates

NWACC’s Food Pantry provides help to NWACC students, faculty and staff throughout the year. Food will be distributed on select Wednesdays and Thursdays, beginning August 30, 2016. The Pantry distribution times will be by appointment. A three-day supply of food is given. Applications for assistance can be picked up at the Student Information Center in the Becky Paneitz Student Center or at the Office of Student Life in room 225 H in the Becky Paneitz Student Center. All persons requesting assistance must have an initial application on file. They will then be required to complete a distribution request form each time they request assistance. Distribution Request forms must be turned in at the Office of Student Life no later than 3:30 pm on the Monday before distribution. Please see the attachment for distribution dates and guidelines. First Time Application and Distribution Request Forms are also attached. In emergency cases, food may be distributed outside of normal distribution times. The Inter-Club Council, (ICC), is a group established by the Student Government Association that includes representatives from every campus club. Are you interested in working in government or the non-profit world? Take PLSC 2303-01W: Intro to Public Administration & Policy (CRN: 11768) in the Fall 2016 Semester. In this 16-week online course, we will look at the way things get done in the public sector. From policy development to human resource management to the budgeting process, this course will give you a window into the many challenges and opportunities faced by an administrator, whether a policeman on the beat, the US Secretary of Defense, or the director of a local charity. There will be no expensive textbook for this course, but articles and a first-hand account of life in federal and state government by Kenneth Ashworth in his book “Caught Between a Dog and a Fireplug”. The 2nd Annual Bentonville Youth Literature Festival will soon be here! The Bentonville Public Library will be filled with exciting author and illustrator presentations, workshops, activities, book sales, book signings, and more! Learning to Learn Project 

The Learning to Learn Project at the University of Arkansas is seeking 5-year-olds, 1st graders, and 3rd graders to participate in a fun interactive project designed to understand how children use their memories. The project takes place on the University of Arkansas campus and participants receive $20 for their participation. It’s fun, and a great learning opportunity for children. The project consists of one visit to campus that will take approximately 30 minutes. Parking is provided! The National Science Foundation-funded project is designed to learn more about how children’s memory develops. In this 16-week online course, we will look at the way things get done in the public sector. From policy development to human resource management to the budgeting process, this course will give you a window into the many challenges and opportunities faced by an administrator, whether a policeman on the beat, the US Secretary of Defense, or the director of a local charity. There will be no expensive textbook for this course, but articles and a first-hand account of life in federal and state government by Kenneth Ashworth in his book “Caught Between a Dog and a Fireplug”. American Public University Representative Visits Transfer Desk on Thursday

Chris Eads, College Outreach Coordinator with American Public University, will be stationed at the Transfer Information Desk from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 11.

APU works with NWACC students to ensure completion of the two-year degree before moving on to complete a four-year degree.  If you are interested in learning more about this full-online university, please make plans to drop by for a visit with Chris.

Brainfuse Online Tutoring Service Orientation Webinar

Distance Learning and the Academic Success Center will host a webinar orientation for Brainfuse, a live online tutoring service that will be available to students starting Summer II.

The webinar will be held on Wednesday, June 17, at 2 p.m. in BH 2459. Everyone is welcome to attend to learn more about this product and how it will benefit our students.

Leadership Opportunity: 2015 iGive Leadership Team Volunteers Needed!

Renewal of Mobile Device Allowances

Mobile device allowances will expire at the June 30th year end.  To be eligible for renewal, you must have a business need for the device and must submit a Mobile Device Allowance Request Form to your Department Head and Cabinet Representative for approval.

The approved forms must be turned into the Controller’s Office no later than June 25 in order to be processed by Payroll for the July reimbursement.

The Library has 2 work-study positions open to start July 1.

Job duties include: Staff library Circulation Desk. Responsibilities include checking out library materials, assisting library users in use of facility and resources, and assisting staff in opening and closing facility. Assist library multimedia coordinator with special projects as assigned. Physical demands include lifting and moving boxes of material, moving loaded library carts, and handling books and other materials. Position requires dependability, flexibility, and dedication to providing quality service to library users. Previous library or public service experience preferred.

Work-Study Position Available in Student Services

Job Description: This position will assist the administrative assistants to the Vice President for Student Services, the Dean of Students, and the Dean of Learner Success. 15 hours per week Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Tracks flow of office documents
  • Creates and maintains files
  • Maintain electronic spreadsheets
  • Assists with maintenance of budget books and purchase orders
  • Creates and organizes manuals and packets
  • Preps, copies, scans, and indexes appeals and other student documents
  • Provides assistance with campus event planning
  • Provides assistance with campus events
  • Assists students with registration during peak registration times
  • Assists with staffing of Financial Aid Express Lane when needed
  • Assists with staffing of Student Information Center when needed

  • Delivers and picks up documents/materials to various departments and divisions

Chris Eads, College Outreach Coordinator with American Public University, will be stationed at the Transfer Information Desk from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 11.

Distance Learning and the Academic Success Center will host a webinar orientation for Brainfuse, a live online tutoring service that will be available to students starting Summer II.

Renewal of Mobile Device Allowances

Mobile device allowances will expire at the June 30th year end.  To be eligible for renewal, you must have a business need for the device and must submit a Mobile Device Allowance Request Form to your Department Head and Cabinet Representative for approval.

The approved forms must be turned into the Controller’s Office no later than June 25 in order to be processed by Payroll for the July reimbursement.

Hope Supply Program: Breast Cancer Society

The Breast Cancer Society’s Hope Supply Program is in need of participants for a Service Learning Project.

Program coordinator Tara Pittsenbarger is looking for volunteers to do service in helping breast cancer patients by assisting them in the Hope Supply Program that gives patients (and survivors) a chance to “shop”  free of charge for personal supplies associated principally with breast cancer needs.

Ms. Pittsenbarger will need volunteers to do various activities. Anyone interested in assisting with this program should contact Tara Pittsenbarger, 479-268-6300, tara@breastcancersociety.org

Students who participate will be eligible for Service Learning credit. Also, if you know of anyone who has been diagnosed with breast cancer, they are eligible to get the free supplies regardless of financial status. Those interested in doing service with the Breast Cancer Society or those wanting to find out how to become eligible for the Hope Supply Program should contact Ms. Pittsenbarger.

Through an accredited curriculum, participating students are taught hard and soft skills essential for life and work in preparation for employment and greater independence.
